Design Intent & Structural Solutions
To improve natural light, flow, and sightlines, we raised the living room floor and removed existing kitchen walls. These changes enhanced panoramic views and created a welcoming environment for both everyday living and entertaining.
During the design and discovery phase, we uncovered a structural column hidden within the walls slated for removal. At the same time, the client expressed a strong desire to preserve the existing tongue-and-groove ceiling, both to honor her grandfather and to remain mindful of the budget.
To address these constraints thoughtfully:
- The structural column supporting the second story was wrapped in wood to complement the faux beams.
- Custom faux beams were designed and fabricated with integrated electrical wiring, allowing for additional lighting without disturbing the original ceiling.
- These beams introduce a rustic yet modern character while preserving the home’s original details.
Comfort, Functionality & Location-Specific Solutions
Located in Evergreen, where travel and weather conditions can be challenging, functionality was a key consideration.
- In-floor heating was installed beneath large-format tile flooring in select areas for added comfort.
- Unheated zones were intentionally incorporated to accommodate the comfort of the homeowners’ pets.
- Our tile team expertly maintained a continuous herringbone pattern, concealing the transition created by the raised living room floor for a seamless visual flow.
Special Features & Finishing Details
This home is filled with subtle details that enhance both aesthetics and everyday usability:
- Toe-kick heat registers provide warmth in primary work zones.
- Hidden pull-out cutting boards and utensil storage keep countertops clean and uncluttered.
- Custom blue and wood-tone cabinetry from Dura Supreme reflects the surrounding natural landscape.
- Warm tile veining and gold-toned fixtures add depth, warmth, and a refined sense of elegance.
The Finished Result
Through thoughtful design solutions and meticulous craftsmanship, this project goes beyond a standard renovation. It serves as a meaningful tribute to family history while fully embracing the needs of modern living, resulting in a home that feels personal, functional, and timeless.
