Project Overview

This warm and rustic kitchen now anchors a reimagined main floor designed for both connection and durability. The transformation includes a 200+ sq ft kitchen expansion, full structural rework, and custom detailing throughout. A muted, nature-inspired palette of weathered wood, reclaimed textures, and deep blue cabinetry grounds the open space with timeless character. Custom Thermador appliances and Dekton surfaces ensure longevity and ease of use for a growing family. From the statement fireplace to the smart pantry pass-through, every design detail balances mountain elegance with family function.

Objectives

• Expand kitchen footprint without compromising layout flow
• Add functional storage solutions for growing family needs
• Create dual-access pantry for efficiency between kitchen and garage entry
• Establish mountain-modern design with warm and durable materials
• Improve mudroom layout to reduce door congestion and increase utility 

Design Challenges

• MEP components located behind existing pantry wall blocked expansion
• Poor kitchen work triangle and traffic interference with patio access
• Four doors in mudroom created an unusable, crowded entry
• Existing kitchen was undersized for the scale of the home
• Needed to structurally support second-story above vaulted ceiling 

Design Solutions

• Reworked HVAC and electrical in new furred-out walls and soffits
• Expanded kitchen into former deck with new foundation and exterior walls
• Installed large structural beam with three wrapped support columns
• Created dual pantry access points from both kitchen and mudroom entry
• Redesigned traffic patterns with widened openings between kitchen, dining, garage, and living room
• Installed French doors at new dining room for outdoor access and natural light

• Weathered cherry cabinetry complements reclaimed railroad tie mantle and floating shelves
• Stacked-look backsplash mimics fireplace texture while offering easy cleaning
• Dekton island countertop provides stain- and scratch-resistant prep space
• Custom Thermador appliance suite with paneled fridge, freezer, wine tower, hearth oven, and coffee system
• Mudroom features 3 cubbies for kids’ storage and hidden coat closet within pantry cabinetry
• New alder doors and trim throughout unify the home’s modern rustic aesthetic
