Located in the heart of the Sixth Ave West Neighborhood, our clients approached us with a vision to rejuvenate their dated 1978 kitchen, reflecting their affinity for a monochromatic aesthetic while fostering a space for hosting and family gatherings. Despite their children no longer residing at home, they cherished entertaining friends and family on special occasions. However, their existing kitchen, encumbered by a drop ceiling and partitioned from the dining room, hindered their hosting aspirations.
During our initial consultation, the clients expressed a clear vision for the project's outcome: removing the dividing wall between the kitchen and dining area, relocating the sink to a larger window overlooking the expansive backyard with a custom water feature. Additionally, they sought to repurpose the underutilized formal sitting room at the front of the house as their new dining space, allowing for an extensive kitchen expansion spanning over 20 feet.
In addressing the design challenges, we encountered the revelation that the drop ceiling concealed all second-story plumbing supply and drains, as well as the HVAC supply. The partioning wall to be removed encumbered the main floor HVAC return as well. However, through strategic planning and innovative solutions, we seamlessly integrated over 40 cabinets into the expanded kitchen space. Lighted wall niches were incorporated to showcase the clients' artwork while concealing utility elements in the middle, enhancing the overall ambiance.
To optimize both space and aesthetics, we creatively raised the drop ceiling and discreetly relocated the main plumbing stack into a small soffit above the existing kitchen window, and the main plumbing stack behind a tall pantry cabient. By ingeniously designing two smaller islands side by side, we fulfilled the client's desire for an expansive island, ensuring accessibility and visual appeal, and a new location for the HVAC return.
The result is a functional and inviting kitchen perfect for entertaining, boasting sleek transitional finishes harmonizing with natural elements. We sourced luxury appliances from Mogogram and SKS, complemented by semi-custom cabinets from Diamond with three-piece crown molding. Super White Dolomite countertops add an elegant touch, completing the sophisticated retreat envisioned by our clients.
