This mid-1990s builder-grade kitchen in Highlands Ranch lacked both storage and usable countertop space, leaving the homeowners frustrated with the functionality and appearance of the space. Nestled between the family room and dining room, the kitchen served as the center of the home, yet felt dated, cramped, and disconnected from the surrounding living spaces. One homeowner admitted she felt embarrassed hosting friends and family because the kitchen lacked both warmth and functionality. As the primary cook of the household, her goal was to create a kitchen that supported everyday cooking while also becoming a welcoming space for entertaining.

The original layout forced pantry goods and small appliances into basement storage due to the lack of cabinetry and organization. Our redesign completely reconfigured the kitchen by relocating the sink to a large rear-facing window, moving the range to an exterior wall to allow for a properly vented hood, and nearly tripling pantry storage within the kitchen footprint. By removing two non-structural walls and a partial wall behind the existing sink, we gained critical space that allowed for a large island with seating for four to five people, hidden storage, and cabinetry on two sides. The island eliminated the need for a small eat-in table while improving circulation and functionality between the adjoining family and dining spaces.
A key project challenge was preserving the existing flooring to maintain budget efficiency. Using leftover flooring materials the homeowners had saved, we carefully patched areas where walls were removed, seamlessly integrating the new layout with the original flooring. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were also extensively reworked to support the new design.
Semi-custom Crown Cabinets paired with soft quartz countertops create a timeless aesthetic designed to age gracefully with the home. Floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinets with rollout shelving maximize accessible hidden storage, while practical appliances keep the kitchen family-friendly and budget-conscious. The result is a bright, functional kitchen that transformed not only the home’s layout, but also how the family gathers and entertains.
